Dandiya Dance Steps Workshop – Sep 17, 2024

Dance instructor/volunteer Ekta Jain, introduced Dandiya dance steps to memory care seniors in a way that made the experience both enjoyable and accessible. Dandiya is a traditional folk dance from the Indian state of Gujarat, typically performed during the festival of Navratri. It involves dancers using colorful wooden sticks, called dandiya, to rhythmically strike together in time with lively music.

Though seniors remained seated for most of the session, the seniors enthusiastically embraced the rhythm and the flow of the music. The combination of sticks, familiar beats, and Ekta’s gentle encouragement helped them connect with the dance. The movements were simplified so that even those with limited mobility could follow along and feel a sense of accomplishment.

Ekta along with Geetanjali Virmani, Arpita Shah, and Poorna Srivalli Piratla, together created beautiful moments of connection and joy, making a lasting impact in the lives of these seniors.
