Healing Euphony: Therapy for seniors and their family caregivers

The use of music to enrich the lives of people living with or without dementia is growing. The benefits of music therapy for people with dementia cannot be overstated. Taking part in musical programs are beneficial for both the elderly and their family caregiver. The power of music has been proven to affect the brain of people with dementia. Music can help people relive their childhood and reconnect with their loved ones. The theme allows people to remember and relive forgotten moments during music sessions.

Music therapy has many benefits for people with dementia, including improved mood and social interaction. It can also enhance memory recall and improve sleep patterns. Familiar music may even be more effective than medication to help control stress and anxiety. For some people, listening to music can make a real difference, as it can stimulate feelings and provide a sense of control over life. And in many cases, it can be more fun than medication.

Research shows that music can create a positive mental state in patients with dementia, allowing them to interact and express themselves. It helps them improve their motor functions, scientifically proven also in patients with Parkinson’s Disease. Here, music stimulates the patients’ sense of rhythm, making them remember how to move. At today’s Volunteering For Seniors Inc (VFS) Talk show I was joined by Sonali Doshi, a music powerhouse from Sonali’s Music Room we both had an interesting and interactive talk about connections of music and dementia.
